Essential oils are made of over a hundred chemical components on average. In general, essential oils are classified as functional groups, including alcohol, aldehydes, coumarins, esters, ethers, ketones, lactones, terpenes, phenols, phenyl, methyl ethers, terpenes, and oxides.  Each chemical group has its unique properties, and esters are known to have sedative and calming effects on the central nervous system, calming the overactive sympathetic nervous system to help switch the mind to the "resting mode".

Common esters found in essential oils

  • Benzyl benzoate

  • Bornyl acetate

  • Geranyl acetate

  • Linalyl acetate

  • Myrtenyl acetate
